Enzymes

Specificity of enzyme

Biology

The human body has more than 1000 enzymes, each specific to its own substrate due to the unique shape of their active site. Enzymes recognize bonds, functional groups, and geometric shapes to catalyze reactions.

There are two types of enzymes: intracellular, which work inside the cell, and extracellular, which work outside the cell. Proteases act only on proteins, while lipases act only on lipids. This bond-specificity allows enzymes to act on specific substances.
