Shell (K,L,M,N,O,P)
The Energy levels or Shell or Orbit are all possible paths on which electrons are revolving around nucleus.
Energy of each shell:
K < L < M < N < O
Subshell (s,p,d,f)
Electrons in the same shell differ in energy by small amount. The main energy level (shell) is divided into sub energy levels known as sub shells. More number of electrons in same shell show high repulsion causing division into sub shells.
Each shell has fixed number and type of sub shells as shown
Electronic configuration of elements
For shells:
Maximum number of electrons in one shell = (where n is shell number)
K shell which is 1st orbit so n=1 so =2
L shell (n=2) = = 8
M shell (n=3) = = 18
N shell (n=4) = = 32
For subshells:
s = 2 electrons
p = 6 electrons
d =10 electrons
f = 14 electrons
