Branches and uses of Chemistry

Chemistry

Definition of Chemistry and its branches

  • Chemistry - Chemistry is the of science which deals with the properties, composition and structure of matter

  • Physical Chemistry - It deals with study of relationship between composition and physical properties of matter

  • Organic Chemistry - It deals with the study of compounds which are only made up of carbon and hydrogen (Hydrocarbon) and their derivatives

  • Inorganic Chemistry - which deals with the study of all elements and their compounds except hydrocarbons. They are obtained from non-living things and applicable in industrial area

  • Bio-chemistry - It deals with the study of compounds which are present in the living organisms such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats. With the help of biochemistry we came to know how living organisms obtain energy from food

  • Industrial Chemistry - It deals with the study of compounds which are used in industry to synthesize products like dyes, cements and glass

  • Nuclear Chemistry - It is the branch of Chemistry which deals with the study of the interaction of chemical materials and their effect on the environment of animals and plants

  • Analytical Chemistry - Analytical chemistry is the branch of chemistry which deals with separation and analysis of kind, quality and quantity of various components in given substance, It used in chromatography, electrophoresis and spectroscopy

  • Medicinal Chemistry - The branch of Chemistry which deals with synthetic organic chemistry, pharmacology and various biological specialties

  • Quantum Chemistry - The branch of Chemistry which deals with application, mechanics and experiments of physical models in chemical system

  • Green Chemistry - The branch of chemistry which deals with study of processes and designing products, which are composed of less hazardous substances. It is also known as sustainable chemistry

Importance of Chemistry in Daily life:

  • Chemistry is involved in cooking, eating and digestion of food

  • Construction, cleaning and washing of our homes are dependable on chemistry

  • Chemistry is also used in production of fertilizers, glass, plastic synthetic fiber, polymer, ceramics, petroleum products, soaps, and detergents

  • Chlorine which is part of chemistry used to treat cholera, typhoid, skin and eyes infection, also used to kill the pathogenic organisms to purify the water

  • Chlorine is also used in production of compounds which is used in industrial areas to produce many drugs, PVC, bleaching agent, disinfectants, solvents, pesticides, refrigerates.

Basic Definitions

  • Atom

Atom - smallest particle of an element, which is consist of three sub-atomic particles - electron, proton and neutron

  • Matter

Anything has mass and occupies space called matter. There are four states of matter - solid, liquid , gases and plasma

  • Molecule

molecule is the smallest particle in a chemical element or Compound that has the chemical properties of that element or Compound. Molecules always formed by the sharing of electron or exchange of electron.

If we talk about the types of molecules - there are three types

    • Mono- molecule consist of single atom- Ar, K , Ca

    • Diatomic molecule consist of two atoms - O2,H2O_2, H_2

    • Polyatomic molecule- consist of more than two atoms - P4,O3P_4,O_3

  • Substance

Substance - Piece of matter in pure form which has fixed composition and properties for example tin, sulfur and diamond sodium chloride and baking soda

  • Element

Substance made of same type of atoms having same atomic number. Elements can occur in free state or in combined form like solid, liquid and gases. up till now 118 elements has been discovered and most of them are solid. Elements are divided into metals, non- metals and metalloids
