Scientific notation

SCIENTIFIC NOTATION:

A number is written in scientific notation when there is a number greater than or equal to 1 but less than 10 multiplied by a power of 10.

The following numbers are written in scientific notation:

• $3.1 \times 10^5$

• $1.043 \times 10^{-3}$

• The coefficient must be equal to or greater than one but less than 10.

• The base must be 10

• The exponent can be negative or positive

• Positive exponents represent numbers greater than 1

• Negative exponents represent numbers smaller than 1
