DEFINITION:

Gravitational field can be described as: “A gravitational field is a region in which a mass experiences a force due to gravitational attraction”.

GRAVITATIONAL FIELD OF EARTH:

Earth has an attractive gravitational field around it. Any object near the Earth experience this force which is due to Earth's gravity. This field is directed towards the centre of the Earth as shown in figure:

  • Earth’s gravitational field is stronger near the surface of earth and gets weaker as we move away from the surface.

  • Earth’s gravitational field force acts on every object whether they are in contact with Earth's surface or not.

  • It is a non-content force. Its not necessary for object to be in contact with earth surface to experience gravitational pull of Earth.

GRAVITATIONAL FIELD STRENGTH:

It is defined as the force per unit mass experienced by a body placed in the gravitational field.

  • It is a vector quantity and denoted by symbol “gg”.

  • Its S.I unit is N/KgN/Kg.
