Thermal Properties Of Matter

Thermometers and temperature scales

Physics

THERMOMETER:

Thermometer is a device, used to measure temperature.

There are different types of thermometers for different purposes. E.g. A clinical thermometer is used to measure the temperature of human body.

SCALES OF TEMPERATURE:

Thermometers have a scale marked on them. The scale help us give a numeric value to the temperature.

The three commonly used temperature scales are:

  1. Celsius scale (Mostly used for environmental measurements)

  2. Fahrenheit scale (Mostly used for clinical measurements)

  3. Kelvin scale (Mostly used for industrial measurements)

INTERCONVERSION OF SCALES:

These three scales of temperature are interconvertible.

Therefore temperature measured in Celsius scale can be converted into Kelvin and Fahrenheit.

  1. Celsius to Kelvin

K=Teperature  in  °C+273\boxed{K=Teperature \; in \; \degree C + 273}

e.g.

100°C  to  K100 \degree C \;to \;K

K=100°+273K= 100 \degree + 273

100°C=373K100 \degree C = 373 \,K

  1. Celsius to Fahrenheit

°F=1.8(Temperature  in  °C)+32\boxed{\degree F=1.8(Temperature \;in \; \degree C) + 32}

e.g.

0°C  to  °F0 \degree C \; to \; \degree F

°F=1.8(0°)+32\degree F = 1.8 (0\degree)+32

°F=0+32\degree F = 0 +32

0°C=32°F0\degree C = 32 \degree F
